Fund-a-Need 2021

Supporting Counseling Services and Social Emotional Resources, Grades K-8

It’s time to raise your virtual paddle to provide needed funding for our core counseling programs and social emotional resources for the 2021-22 school year.

As we continue to navigate the pandemic and look to a future return to in-person schooling, counseling services and resources play an important role at Salmon Bay. Given what our students have been through in the past year, funding counseling services ensures continued support to foster student growth and ongoing resiliency in the school year ahead. We ask that you raise your virtual paddle to fill in the funding gaps for this critical effort. Every dollar raised will help us nurture the social and emotional development of our children.

Our counseling staff and programming are the foundation of our unique school environment, delivering vital services for students, staff, and parents, including:
  • Social emotional learning curriculum for elementary classrooms and middle school homeroom/advisory
  • Teaching and learning resources, including extra counselor time, during middle school homeroom periods
  • Safe, nurturing spaces for all children experiencing individual challenges, whether it's dealing with anxiety, friendships, social media use, understanding identity, or grief
  • Small group counseling on topics such as friendship, mindfulness, organization, and changing families
  • Academic, college, and career exploration and planning for both elementary and middle school students
  • Support for our popular Roots of Empathy program, which brings an infant and parent into the classroom so children leave elementary school with increased knowledge of emotions, safety, taking care of others, and empathy
  • Build relationships with students and families while participating in daily school activities, such as playground supervision, welcoming families in the morning and afternoon, or through programming such as Friday Sing
  • Teacher professional development on evidence-based practices to support social and emotional development
  • Connections to resources, advice, and guidance for families
  • Since the pandemic started and schools closed last spring, our counselors coordinated the giving of over $20,000 to Salmon Bay families directly impacted by the pandemic — money that was generated both through fundraising from our own school community and from institutional giving programs such as InvestEd, Right Now Needs Fund, and Operation School Bell.
  • Coordination and facilitation of the Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) process and Student Intervention Team, which meets regularly with teaching teams to review data on students, discuss concerns, and plan for needed interventions or supports.
